April 7, 2021 is World Health Day

Am 7. April 2021 ist Weltgesundheitstag

Since 1950, World Health Day has been celebrated annually on April 7th. On this day, the World Health Organization (WHO) commemorates its founding with a changing motto each year. In 1948, delegates at the first World Health Assembly called for the establishment of a day to remember the founding of the WHO.

The motto changes from year to year and is chosen from the respective focus area of current WHO work. World Health Day merely marks the beginning of various campaigns that extend far beyond April 7th. In today's blog post, we will tell you what the motto for this year's World Health Day is and what programs are planned.

World Health Day 2021

The World Health Organization (WHO) uses World Health Day to bring key health policy issues to public attention. The goal is to develop solutions for the annually chosen key theme – and to do so worldwide. This year's World Health Day is dedicated to health equity. The campaign motto for 2021 is: "Building a fairer, healthier world."

This motto was chosen not least because of the ongoing, worldwide pandemic. Even before the pandemic outbreak, there was a health policy imbalance in various health areas. The ongoing crisis exacerbates this problem.

Currently, the observance of World Health Day is planned as a virtual event. You can attend the World Health Organization (WHO) press conference for the opening of World Health Day virtually from April 6th. The program is currently scheduled to begin on April 7th between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. These two dates mark the kick-off of the campaign. It will run throughout the entire calendar year and be represented by various events. The German Federal Association for Prevention and Health Promotion (BVPG) will also participate in this year's campaign.

World Health Day for Health Topics of Global Relevance

World Health Day primarily serves as a platform for exchange between countries on various health topics. Through the campaign, the WHO aims to raise awareness of health problems among the global public. In recent years, themes that highlighted the dramatic conditions in developing countries have predominantly dominated. This appeal was primarily directed at industrialized countries to offer people in poorer countries long-term prospects through better medical care.

Other topics such as

  • vaccination,
  • nutrition,
  • smoking,
  • accidents,
  • and family health

have also been mottos in recent decades. They are equally relevant for developing and industrialized countries.

The "Health for All – Strategy," initiated in 1977, increasingly focuses on topics of strategic importance. National health systems, such as:

  • Primary health care,
  • Health communication,
  • and health promotion

are in focus.
