Promote dental health through antibacterial foods

Durch antibakterielle Nahrungsmittel die Zahngesundheit fördern

Few people know that there are antibacterial foods. The natural active ingredients help against bacteria that like to accumulate in the mouth and contribute to the development of tooth decay. In today's blog post, learn how mushrooms and onions can promote and sustainably improve dental health.

Bacteria pose a serious threat to healthy teeth. Dental diseases such as tooth decay and periodontitis are triggered by them. Although harmful bacteria can be stopped with special active ingredients - such as those found in toothpaste or mouthwashes - long-term use of these products can impair the natural oral flora.

In nature, plants produce special substances for their own protection against bacteria. These so-called secondary plant compounds often shape the taste and smell of the plants. The special thing is that they not only protect the plant itself but can also transfer their effect to humans.

Antibacterial Foods

Many plant-based foods contain secondary plant compounds that originally serve to protect themselves, but can also help the human body. Onions, green tea, garlic, various herbs, birch sugar, and spices are rich in antibacterial ingredients.

Onions are known for their intense smell and taste. They contain valuable substances such as allicin and various mustard oils, which help the plant defend itself against bacteria. Onion extracts can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus bacteria - a main cause of tooth decay. Positive effects have also been observed in periodontitis.

Green tea also has antibacterial properties. In traditional Asian medicine, it is recommended for strengthening teeth and oral mucosa.

Garlic also works similarly to onions. The bulb can fight bacteria with regular intake. During the Second World War, garlic was even used as a natural substitute for antibiotics.

Birch sugar - also known as xylitol - tastes like conventional sugar, but does not provide food for caries bacteria. Therefore, xylitol is considered particularly tooth-friendly.

Kitchen herbs such as oregano, tarragon, sage, peppermint, and thyme also have a germ-inhibiting effect and contribute to oral health.

Spices such as chili, allspice, and ginger contain - similar to garlic and onions - so-called pungent substances. Cinnamon, lemongrass, anise, and caraway are also said to have a good antibacterial effect.
